Getting started with Lone Working

Lone Working helps keep people who work alone safe by supporting emergency response and day-to-day contact. Users can raise an alarm when they need help, while those using the Lone Worker app can also stay in touch throughout the day through check-ins, proactive safety confirmations, and HomeSafe.

This guide explains how Lone Working is structured and how the main parts of the product fit together: licences, monitoring options, Alarm Response Profiles, alarm activation methods, and app-based safety features.

Overview

Lone Working is made up of a few connected parts:

  • Licences control which users can access Lone Working and be actively monitored.

  • Monitoring determines who receives and responds to alarms.

  • Alarm Response Profiles define how alarm escalation is handled for each monitored user.

  • Alarm activation methods define how users raise alarms, either through a Safe Pro device or the Lone Worker app.

  • Lone Worker app safety features help users stay in touch with their organisation, confirm they are safe, and confirm they have arrived home safely.

Licences

Every active Lone Working user needs a Lone Working licence.

Users who are actively monitored also need a Monitoring licence. A Monitoring licence allows the user to be monitored through your organisation’s selected monitoring setup, such as Vatix 24/7 Monitoring or Self-Monitoring.

Monitoring

Monitoring determines who receives and responds to alarms raised by lone workers.

There are two monitoring options: Vatix 24/7 Monitoring and Self-Monitoring.

Vatix 24/7 Monitoring

Vatix 24/7 Monitoring connects alarms to the Vatix Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC), which is staffed around the clock.

When an alarm is raised, ARC responders assess the situation and escalate according to the user’s Alarm Response Profile. This may include contacting nominated contacts or emergency services, depending on the situation and your organisation’s setup.

Self-Monitoring

Self-Monitoring routes alarms to your organisation’s nominated contacts instead of the Vatix ARC.

When an alarm is raised, the nominated contacts are contacted according to the user's Alarm Response Profile. The first contact to answer becomes the responder.

Alarm Response Profiles

Alarm responses are configured using Alarm Response Profiles. Each monitored user needs an Alarm Response Profile.

An Alarm Response Profile defines who is contacted when the user raises an alarm and in what order. This helps ensure alarms are routed to the right people based on your organisation's monitoring setup.

Alarm activation methods

Users can raise alarms using either a Safe Pro device or the Protector Mobile app, depending on your organisation’s setup and the user’s assigned licences.

Safe Pro device

The Safe Pro device is a dedicated physical alarm worn by lone workers.

It works independently of the user’s smartphone, so users can raise an alarm without needing to open the Protector Mobile app.

Lone Worker app (Protector Mobile app)

The Lone Worker app (Protector Mobile app) is installed on the lone worker’s smartphone. Users can raise an alarm directly from the app when they need help.

Lone Worker app safety features

Timed Alerts

Timed Alerts let users set a timer for a specific activity or period of lone working. If the user does not cancel the Timed Alert before the timer ends, an alarm is raised.

Check-ins

Check-ins help lone workers confirm they are safe during the day. Managers or peers can send check-in requests to lone workers through the Protector Mobile app. Lone workers can respond to these requests to confirm they are safe. Lone workers can also proactively check in from the Protector Mobile app without waiting for a request.

HomeSafe

HomeSafe helps lone workers confirm they have arrived home safely. When using HomeSafe, the lone worker can send a confirmation from the Protector Mobile app after finishing their shift or lone working activity.
